There are many job opportunities within the hospitality industry, which include but are not limited to hotels, restaurants and meeting venues. According to The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 12.4 million people work in the hospitality industry today, making about 8.6 percent of all employment.

  1. Casino/Gaming Supervisor: Managing the daily operations of a casino is a top job in the hospitality industry. As a casino supervisor you would need to ensure there are enough dealers on the floor, maintain customer relations, and organize special events.
  2. Hotel/Lodging Manager: A hotel manager is “behind the scenes,” ensuring the hotel runs properly and smoothly. They deal with budgets, cost of operations, general maintenance and staffing. Managers also manage hotel staff, including individual managers for different hotel departments such as housekeeping, restaurants, or front desk.
  3. Food Service Manager: The daily operations of restaurants and other establishments that prepare and serve food and beverages to customers are the responsibility of food service managers. Managers ensure that customers are satisfied with their dining experience.
  4. Restaurant Owner/Operator: Within this position you must interact directly with customers, and also maintain all operations that happen in the front and back of the house. Restaurant operators differ from managers in that operators must deal with the general public more often, whereas managers typically deal with staff.
  5. Meeting, Convention and Event Planner: Meeting and convention planners must bring all elements of a function together to make it a successful event. Event planners can plan small-scale events, such as parties, in addition to big events like wedding receptions and concerts. Event planners must negotiate contracts, review and suggest menu options, create room layouts for different types of events and interact with clients and vendors.
  6. Executive Chef: Under this position you must create new menu offerings, train chefs in preparing meals and appropriate portion sizes, negotiate contracts, and purchase food and restaurant supplies. Typically this position requires both cooking and managing skills.
